The dual exhaust tips are likely to lead to the high-output 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6 engine. We’ve never seen many Ford Expedition test vehicles in public. But, now a simple refresh for the full-size SUV is coming soon, and there will be new trim levels as well.
Yes, our spies recently caught on to a car like the Ford Expedition Hybrid, but the appearance of today’s prototypes is a bit rougher.
Therefore, we have good reason to believe that Ford will offer the Ford Expedition Timberline with some of its well-known off-road upgrades.
How do we arrive at such a conclusion? For starters, this Ford Expedition test vehicle is slightly taller than any of the previous models we’ve seen.
It is especially noticeable when you look at the rear suspension of this car and speaking of that, the lower swing arm looks a bit sturdy compared to usual.
At the front, we can see the skid plates protecting the underside of the engine, but perhaps the biggest clue is on the front wheels.
Do the wheels look familiar? It should be, because we also saw it on the Ford Explorer Timberline test vehicle back in January 2021.
Peel off the camouflage from the front clip, and we’re sure you’ll find red accents on the front fascia.
What can we expect behind the tarp covering the car? Our sources haven’t found much to share on that front.
However, the dual exhaust tips visible at the rear are likely to point to the high-output 3.5-liter Ford EcoBoost V6 engine.
In this Ford Expedition Hybrid, the twin-turbocharged engine offers 400 horsepower (298 kilowatts).
However, an increase in power can be made to make this Ford Expedition Timberline model more aggressive.

2023 Ford Expedition Redesign
Our spy shots suggest a significant change in the expedition’s updated front style. There seem to be changed in the headlights, grille, and lower fascia.
Some facial photographs also show large changes. The big news is an updated center stack that includes a large, portrait-oriented touch screen that serves as an information hub. It looks the same as the one that was introduced in an electric SUV for Mustang Mach-E batteries.
The new technology in the car will give Expedition what it needs to challenge the Chevrolet Tahoe and the suburbs, both of which have better faces than Ford since the 2021 anniversary design.
It is not clear what Ford is planning for propulsion trains but a good bet is the availability of the same hybrid engine introduced in the F-150 PowerBoost. The power plant combines a 3.5-liter dual-turbocharged V-6 engine with an electric motor combined with a 10-speed automatic transmission, delivering 430 hp and 570 kg of torque.
The trip is currently offered exclusively with a 3.5-liter twin-turbo V-6 engine that inflates 375 hp and 470 kg in a standard way and 400 hp and 480 kg in platinum form.
Another option for an updated Expedition is a new version focused on the field (Timberline Expedition?) Which is even harder than Expeditions equipped with the Off-Road FX4 package.

Starting with the Blue Oval, the Expedition 2023 will feature an updated Passion and a more high-tech interior. Camouflage does a great job of hiding exterior changes, but we can expect a repaired grille, a different lighting unit, and new bumpers.
The spy photographer also photographed what is believed to be Timberline’s new design. Designed to fight the GMC Yukon AT4, this model features a more powerful front end with a bumper that maximizes approach and departure angles.
The SUV is also equipped with increased ride height, a dual exhaust system, and dark wheels wrapped in Goodyear Wrangler rubber.
The exterior looks evolutionary, but the cabin will benefit from high-tech changes thanks to the information system sourced from the Mustang Mach-i. It features a portrait orientation and a screen that can be 15.5 inches in size.
Elsewhere, we can see a revised digital instrument cluster and dashboard with new vents. The model also seems to be adopting a new steering wheel and a familiar center console.
The Lincoln Navigator 2023 will get a slight refresh that seems to include a new front fascia with refurbished headlights and redesigned fog lamps. The back is also camouflaged, but the changes are less noticeable.
The interior may be very closed but the navigator will adopt a new information system with a larger display. This is probably a good move because the current 10-inch information system is dwarfed by Escalade’s 16.9-inch display.
Under the hood, we can expect the 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6 engine. It currently produces between 375 hp (280 hp / 380 hp) and 450 hp (336 hp / 456 hp), depending on model and finish.
However, this may not be the only engine as reports suggest that the SUV may offer the 2021 F-150 EcoBoost 3.5-liter hybrid. It produces 430 hp (321 hp / 436 hp) and a torque of 570 kg (773 nm) in the pickup.
The hybrid power plant allows the F-150 to return to the city 25 MPG, highway 26 MPG, and 25 MPG combined. What it can do in Expedition and Navigator remains a mystery, but Expedition 2021 received a maximum of 17 MPG city, 23 MPG road, and 19 MPG combined.
Ford Expedition 2023 Spyshot
The fourth generation of the Ford Expedition, which arrives new for the 2018 model year, is a significant improvement over the third generation.
The Blue Oval packs more benefits and includes it while reducing its weight and increasing power, which helps accelerate its sales. The test vehicle stands out with a rounded camouflage that hides the front and rear fascia. Ford does a great job of hiding any change from inspection because the camouflage completely covers the lighting elements.
The headlights and taillights will also need to be redesigned, which will likely coincide with subtle changes to the front and rear bumpers and the redesigned grille.
These are usually the usual upgrades that come with a mid-cycle refresh. The test vehicle also had an extra-long weird exhaust that bulged out from under the rear bumper.
The fourth generation of the expedition has one engine – the EcoBoost V6 with a turbo capacity of 3.5 liters – although Ford offers two outputs. The entry-level model puts out 375 horsepower (279 kilowatts) and a torque of 470 kilowatts (637 meters Newton).

The Ford Expedition is a large three-line SUV in the classic sense of the term. It has a rugged body-on-frame construction, plenty of ground clearance, and a four-wheel-drive system to get you anywhere you go even if the road ahead is a little rocky.
This is the largest SUV in Ford’s lineup, sitting on top of the newly redesigned Ford Explorer. When this Expedition generation was launched in 2018, it was a significant improvement over its predecessor.
Comfortable and spacious, especially if you choose the longer Expedition Max. Changes for 2021 include a new base trim and more optional features.
While the Ford Expedition has been our favorite in its class, two redesigned competitors threaten its dominance. The Chevrolet Tahoe, along with its longer sibling, the Suburban, is all-new for 2021.
The Tahoe and the new Suburban make up for many of the previous models’ flaws, although we think many aspects – especially the interior – don’t quite fit into Ford. Other alternatives include the old Nissan Armada and Toyota Sequoia.

2023 Ford Expedition Max
The new styling and 450 horsepower hybrid options will help this full-size SUV answer the new versions of the Chevrolet Tahoe and Suburban.
The biggest change since the 2018 model-year redesign aims to keep the Expedition 2023 relevant, in part with the bet that the gas-electric hybrid is a smarter way to increase power and boost fuel economy than any diesel engine available in General Motors competition.
The renewal of appearance will likely be concentrated on the nose and tail, leaving the body largely untouched. The revamped dashboard can be upgraded to the available 12-inch central infotainment touchscreen. And the hybrid version can offer Ford’s Pro Power Onboard integrated power generator.
Expect the ’22 Expedition to return seating for seven or eight people and in its regular and extended Expedition Max form, either with a choice of rear-wheel drive or all-wheel drive (AWD).
Together with the high-end platform-mate, the Lincoln Navigator, Ford’s largest passenger vehicle is an old-school sports utility vehicle. Unlike crossover SUVs, where the body and frame are attached to a car-like structure, the body is attached to a separate truck-type frame.
This heavier-duty construction is suitable for towing and hauling but generally cannot match the cross for the ride, handling, or fuel economy. GM’s rivals – the Tahoe, Suburban, GMC Yukon, and Cadillac Escalade – were also built that way.
And their 2021 model year redesign has finally given them the convenience and efficiency of the packaging that comes with an independent rear suspension. That means Expedition and Navigator no longer enjoy the one advantage that makes them the ultimate all-around SUV.
Buy the ’21 if you want a good-looking SUV with plenty of room, good performance, and enough power to pull in £ 9,300.
The Expedition ’21 has the look and technique that came with the 2018 redesign, a repeat of which features a new body made largely of weight-efficient aluminum and a more powerful yet more fuel-efficient powertrain.
Wait for Expedition 2023 to get the styles and features that will prop up this SUV at its next full redesign, possibly for the 2024 or ’25 models.
The appearance change for ’22 won’t be drastic; expect most of the revisions that will reinforce his family’s likeness to Ford’s redesigned F-150 pickup truck. Ford should make good use of the new F-150 for some of the cabin features as well.
We’d recommend it to borrow the available 12-inch infotainment touchscreen to replace the 8-inch Expedition, which now seems too small and out of date.

Most significantly, wait for ’22 if you are intrigued by the prospect of the Expeditions mix options. It will combine a twin-turbocharged V-6 engine with an electric motor and will almost certainly be the Expedition’s most powerful and fuel-efficient.
It can work with the Ford Pro Power Onboard integrated generator system capable of running a wide range of electrical accessories, from power tools to mini-fridges.
Expect the Expeditions 2020 lineup to again include entry-level LX trim tailored to commercial fleets and buyers, and returning retail models in XLT, Limited, King Ranch, and Platinum classes. All will be available in regular and Max lengths.
Will the 2023 Ford Expedition’s style be any different?

A variety of light and dark wheel finishes will be available, along with optional sizes for the XLT and Limited. Also on the back will be a variety of appearance packages, usually adding black-themed trim and wheels.
The regular Expedition will again fit the Chevy Tahoe and GMC Yukon, the Max Expedition with the Suburban and the Yukon XL., At about 18.5 feet tall – enough to test the size of most residential garages – the Max will stay considerably longer than the regular Expedition, with a distance wheelbase of 9.1 inches (distance between the front and rear axle) and about 12 inches overall.

However, the two ’22 Expeditions were supposed to have the same passenger volume. Max will continue to devote most of the extra length to cargo space. Expect 36 cubic feet behind the third-row seats versus the regular 21 expeditions.
With the second row folded, the difference will repeat about 80 cubic feet versus 64, and with the second and third rows folded it should stay around 121 versus 105. All ’22 Expeditions will return comes with a third-row seat that can be folded and strong with separate opening glass.
Second-row liftgate and foldable hands-free should remain optional on the XLT, if not standard.
While the 2023 Expedition and the refreshed ’22 Navigator will remain brothers and sisters, Lincoln will almost certainly continue to look and feel much fancier.
The most striking difference in their cabin, the Navigator boasts world-class materials, the Expedition is made with lots of hard plastic panels. The softer surface will help Expedition ’22 fit into the interior of GM’s latest full-size SUV upgrade.
Expedition the Expedition XLT to return in upholstery, Limited in leather, King Range with the Del Rio leather logo, and Platinum in luxurious perforated leather with layered bolsters complemented by genuine wood accents and gracefully sewn doors and dash trim.
This big Ford will again be hard to beat for passenger space. All but King Ranch must return with seating for eight.
Two second-row buckets will remain standard at King Ranch and optional for the other models, around $ 600. All second-row seats slide, all recline. There are hooks for up to five child safety seats.
This is again going to be a really high step up into the interior, so you’ll be using the standard grip handles and running board liberally (likely going back to powering everything but the XLT). Upon boarding, there was a sizable reclining seat in the first two rows.
The third line is a challenge to reach but accommodating enough for adults. Surprisingly, there’s good legroom although compensating for the seat cushion that’s not too low to the floor is cramped headroom for those over 5 feet 6 feet tall.
GM lauds improved third-line accommodation in redesigned Chevy, GMC, and Cadillac SUVs, but we think the Expedition and Navigator, along with the Toyota Sequoia, retain the edge in third-row space and comfort.
Are there any mechanical changes to the Ford Expedition 2023?
Yes, hybrid. It will almost certainly borrow from the new F-150 a twin-turbocharged 3.5-liter V-6 equipped with an electric motor. Ford calls it the PowerBoost Hybrid V-6.

Expect every ’22 Expedition to return with Normal, Economy, Sport, and Crane / Transport drivetrain modes. Rear-wheel drive will be a standard, optional all-wheel drive for around $ 3,000.
It’s a little pricey, but it should again be a comprehensive setup with a low gearbox, lock-up rear differential, and driver-selectable settings for mud, ruts, grass, gravel, snow, and sand.
The FX4 Off-Road Package will once again add low-range 4WD gears, seven underbody slip plates, custom gears, off-road shock absorbers, and other heavy-duty enhancements, but retain the standard 9.8-inch ground clearance.
For 2021, the FX4 package is available on the regular and Max XLT and Limited models for $ 1,650.
No vehicle of that size – not even the regular Expeditions about 17 feet long, 6.5 feet high, and weighing nearly 3 tons – was agile. A lean, nose-low body becomes evident if you are in a hurry to make a turn.
But there’s no reason to suspect this SUV won’t continue to look sturdy and balanced enough to make confident cornering at a reasonable speed.
Steering should still be well-weighted, natural, and progressive, although in our tests we were able to detect some vibrations from the FX4’s slightly more prominent package tires.
Ride quality will once again be top-notch – and unaffected by the exhaust holes – with 18-inch wheels and tires with relatively high sidewalls. Impact absorption tends to be compromised with bigger wheels and tires, but it never feels heavy.
A suspension that automatically adapts to road conditions must be returned as a Limited and standard option at King Ranch and Platinum.
Called, Continuously Controlled Damping, it works subtly to maximize comfort and tranquility.
Will the fuel economy of the 2023 Ford Expedition improve?
Yes, thanks to a hybrid. The EPA rating certainly wasn’t released in time for this review, but we’d have a rough estimate of 22/25/20 mpg city/highway / combined with rear-wheel drive, 21/24/20 with AWD, and an overall range of around 700 miles between charges.
Such a ranking would be based on Expeditions’ position as the most fuel-efficient entry in this indeed thirsty class.
Among the natural gas-only models expect the Expedition ’22 regular length to have a speed of about 17/23/19 mpg city/highway / combined with rear-wheel drive and 17/22/19 with AWD.
Search for each 2023 Max Expedition to give the same 17/23/19 score for a rear-drive and 16/21/18 mpg with AWD. Ford should continue to recommend 87-octane gas for all of the ’22 Expeditions.
Will the 2023 Ford Expedition have any new features?
As connectivity possibilities increase, look for extended safety technology as standard or optional.
Each Expedition ’22 will return with autonomous emergency braking that can stop the SUV to avoid a frontal collision with other vehicles, objects, or pedestrians.
Also included are blind spots and rear traffic detection, lane maintenance automatic steering correction, and automatic high-beam headlights.
For the 2021 model year, adaptive cruise control to maintain a defined distance from traffic ahead, even in stop-and-go driving, is optional on the XLT and above standards. remains an option for 2020 Limited and is not available on XLT.
Other manufacturers have made this feature standard on much cheaper vehicles, and we believe Ford should include it in every family-oriented version of SUVs like the 2023 Expedition.
Ford must, however, support the Expedition’s safety equipment with features introduced for the redesigned F-150. On the agenda is Active Drive Assist, which enables hands-free driving on pre-mapped sections of the highway.
The onboard camera tracks the driver’s eye, ensuring attention on the road. Also new is Intersection Assist, which detects oncoming traffic and applies brakes to thwart unsafe turns. Active Park Assist 2.0 is also coming.
It builds on the Expedition’s already available hands-free parking system assuming all steering, shifting, braking, and accelerator control during parallel or upright parking while the driver is holding only a button.
The reconfigured dashboard will probably include upgraded digital gauges but can retain the center 8-inch infotainment touchscreen as standard, with an optional 10-inch lower trim and included with King Ranch and/or Platinum.

While Ford’s advanced Sync 4 interface for mobile devices will be included with every ’22 Expedition, to ensure real-time GPS mapping in the absence of a cellular signal you’ll need an embedded navigation system.
Expect to stay standard at King’s Ranch and Platinum and optional for Limited in some packages.
The rear entertainment system with dual headrests should be returned as an option for all ’22 Expeditions.
Also available across the board will be a heavy-duty crane package with the electronically limited-slip rear differential, dedicated axle ratios, integrated trailer brake controller, heavy-duty radiators, and Ford Pro Trailer Backup Assist.
What’s the difference in the price of the Ford Expedition 2023?
