2025 Ford Expedition: New Powerful and Reliable SUV Review

Posted on

2025 Ford Expedition: Many people know that the Ford Expedition SUV can efficiently transport up to eight people and enough goods to feed a small community. Of course, Ford’s full-size three-row SUV has a higher ride height, making it harder to climb than a minivan, but the Expedition and Expedition Max have a towing capacity of more than 9,000 pounds. With a Honda Odyssey, you’ll have a hard time towing something that heavy. With body-on-frame construction and optional all-wheel drive, the Expedition provides peace of mind for drivers who need to go off the beaten path. They also provide one of the most forgiving rides, but this is partially offset by the mischievous steering.

Likewise, the large interior is compromised by some cheap interior trim. Unlike the Chevy Tahoe and Suburban which have a variety of powertrain options, the Expedition so far is powered by a twin-turbo V-6 engine. At the very least, the powerful engine ensures Ford’s full-size SUV transports the family and their belongings quickly.

  • Spacious interior with ample passenger and luggage space.
  • The powerful V6 engine provides fast acceleration.
  • A large basic display screen or an even larger optional screen
    tows more than similar SUVs.

The new Ford Expedition is Ford’s largest and most capable SUV. Its truck-based design provides significantly more capability than large three-row crossovers like the Honda Pilot and Volkswagen Atlas. The Expedition can tow up to 9,300 pounds, while unibody competitors like the Pilot and Atlas are limited to 5,000 pounds. If you have a large ski boat or heavy camper to tow, the Expedition is a great choice for a capable large three-row SUV.

2025 Ford Expedition Review

As far as we know, Ford’s largest three-row SUV model is ready for an overhaul. The Ford Expedition, which went on sale in 2018, will likely be refreshed or replaced with an all-new model in 2025. The new Expedition will have features designed to outperform comparable full-size three-row SUVs like the Chevrolet Tahoe and Jeep Train. Here’s what we believe you can expect from the 2025 Ford Expedition.

The standard engines on the new Expedition will probably be very similar to those now used. It will be a 3.5-liter twin-turbocharged V-6 engine mated to a 10-speed automatic transmission, with RWD standard and 4WD optional.

Base output can increase to existing mid-range levels of 400 hp and 480 lb-ft. It’s also possible (though doubtful) that power could reach 440 hp and 510 lb-ft of torque, which is currently only available on the Expedition Timberline.

2025 Ford Expedition Redesign

In addition to the start of deliveries of the 2024 Ford Mustang S650 this summer, other important novelties from the Blue Oval company are the limited series GTD supercar variant and the 2024 Ford F-150 facelift.

The new 2024 F-150 full-size pickup truck starts at $36,570 for the XL model and quickly climbs to $64k for the Tremor, $73,425 for the King Ranch or Platinum, and nearly $78k for the EcoBoost Raptor. However, if you want a fully enclosed version of America’s best-selling truck series, you’ll have to start with at least $55,525 for the base Expedition three-row SUV.

With a spacious cockpit, three rows of seating, and the same underpinnings as the F-Series, this big Expedition SUV is consistent with the Lincoln Navigator since the 1997 model year. One thing’s for sure: You’ll never run out of space in an Expedition, even if it’s one it no longer has nine seats as it did in the early decades of its existence.

If eight people don’t have enough luggage space, don’t worry; there’s also the Expedition MAX, which is huge and likely one of the largest SUVs in the world, along with the Navigator L, Chevy Suburban, and GMC Yukon XL, Jeep Grand Wagoneer L, and the mammoth Cadillac Escalade ESV. However, some people may still be less impressed, this time because of the plain design.

We’re not sure if Ford has a real solution for them when it comes time to deliver a mid-cycle refresh, but the imaginative world of digital car content creators won’t disappoint. More specifically, the fine folks at YouTube channels PoloTo and TheAutoReport have some CGI dreams of a renovated full-size three-row SUV, and the two-pixel masters are racing to imagine a modern redesign to impress as technology improves.

Assume you are looking for something straightforward. In that situation, CGI specialists PoloTo took advantage of the Expedition’s natural size and gave it a sleeker yet unobtrusive aspect, thanks to full-width LED headlights at the front and rear. Instead, virtual artists from TheAutoReport take a more extreme approach, with stylish LED headlights and front fascia treatments that vary depending on trim level.

The geometric LED design is even more prominent at the rear and is complemented by large, aftermarket-style bronze wheels.

2025 Ford Expedition Changes

The 2022 Ford Expedition debuted as a refreshed version of the full-size SUV, with a slew of changes including exterior styling updates, an optional 15.5-inch display, Sync 4, and the addition of two new variants – the Stealth Edition Performance Package and the off-road-oriented Timberline.

However, as the Ford Authority revealed in October, additional improvements are planned shortly as The Blue Oval attempts to keep the Ford Expedition competitive in a heavily contested industry. Ford Authority has discovered the 2025 Ford Expedition for the first time, just a few months after discovering a prototype.

Rather than a complete redesign, insiders have told Ford Authority that the 2025 Ford Expedition would be more of a facelift, following the update of the 2022 model year. That much is obvious from these photographs, which show a prototype covered in extensive camouflage, yet with very familiar general style elements that match up pretty well with the contemporary Expedition.

Despite the camouflage, there are a few noticeable differences, including a new front clip and possibly a new hood, both of which are usual with new car refreshes. Moving along the side, we can see that the midsection of the massive SUV is nearly identical to the existing model, which is not surprising.

That is not the case at the back, where we can see a new liftgate and taillight design, completing off some significant improvements. Perhaps more curiously, it appears that the rear wiper has been placed out of sight – possibly beneath the third brake light – giving the 2025 Ford Expedition a cleaner appearance from this end.

The interior of this prototype is covered up, indicating that it will likely receive some styling alterations as well as new technology. In any case, it appears that the 2025 Ford Expedition will be more of an evolution than a revolution, but we will undoubtedly have more to report in the coming months.

The next Expedition will be a three-row SUV. It can accommodate up to eight people in either standard- or extended-length body configurations. Ford will most likely do everything it can to increase passenger and cargo space over the existing 2024 Expedition, with measurements shown below for reference.

Technology

Check out the recently updated 2025 Ford Explorer for hints about the upcoming Expedition’s interior layout and technology features. The Explorer introduces the Ford Digital Experience (FDE) user interface, which promises greatly increased processing capability and easy connection with Apple, Android, Google, and other devices. The 13.2-inch infotainment touchscreen and 12.3-inch digital gauge display are standard.

All three rows should have USB charging outlets, and a wireless charging pad will most likely be included upfront. A 360-degree camera, head-up display, rear-seat entertainment screens, and a Bang & Olufsen audio system are all possible premium tech offerings.

2025 Ford Expedition Hybrid

Don’t count out the prospect of an electrified Expedition, whether hybrid, all-electric, or both. Ford might adopt the hybrid configuration from the F-150 PowerBoost, which combines a 3.5-liter twin-turbo V-6 with an electric motor to achieve significant fuel economy gains over the conventional engine, perhaps up to 23 or more mpg in city and highway driving.

Could there be an Expedition Lightning? Ford’s expertise with the all-electric F-150 Lightning would help shape a battery-powered Expedition, which would most likely have dual-motor AWD and a range of up to 320 miles, depending on specification.

If an all-electric Expedition arrives, it may not be until 2026 or 2027. It’s also unclear whether Ford’s electric three-row SUV will be based on the Expedition or a whole new car.

2025 Ford Expedition Driving

Ford’s Blue Cruise semi-autonomous driving technology will most likely be offered in the 2018 Expedition. Blue Cruise enables hands-free driving on a vast network of roadways across the United States and Canada.

It will most likely be optional on entry-level trims but included on higher-end versions. All 2025 Expedition models should include driver assistance systems like automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, lane keep assist, and adaptive cruise control.

2025 Ford Expedition MPG

Ford has to do something to improve fuel economy for the 2024 Expedition, which scores 17/23 mpg city/highway at best and 16/19 mpg at worst.

Verdict

The 2025 Ford Expedition is an excellent choice for a large three-row SUV. It has a large cabin, comfortable seats, a powerful turbocharged V6 engine, and is easy to drive. The only major concern we have is the disappointing real-world fuel efficiency.
