There’s less to shout about in the boot, though. At 391 liters, it is an average of liters for the class, a bit bigger than a Volkswagen Golf and smaller than a Honda Civic. All are swamped by the cavernous Skoda Octavia’s near-600-litre boot. Your engine choices are pretty simple as there are just two variations of a 1.0-litre petrol engine on offer, with 125hp and 155hp, and a selection of manual and automatic gearboxes – both of which have a mild hybrid system, except the entry-level option. The more powerful engine is the best pick because it’s just as economical as the lower-powered model, getting up to 55mpg with the manual and offering more punch when needed.

New Ford Focus 2024: Production of the current Ford Focus small car is due to end in 2025, and there is no sign of a successor as the automaker moves towards an electric future.
The final fourth-generation Focus car will launch from the factory doors in Saarlouis, Germany, in 2025, Ford Europe boss Stuart Rowley told European media overnight, with no “additional models” planned for the factory assembly line afterward.
Ford has yet to confirm whether the Focus will continue as an electric car, though with the small hatchback sales declining in Europe and overseas and the demise of the smaller Fiesta in the years to come, that’s uncertain.
Ford sold about 101,000 Focus hatchbacks and wagons in Europe last year, less than half the 224,000 in 2019 and down from 319,000 in 2009. Sales peaked at around 543,000 in 2001, immediately after its launch in 1998.
Ford Australia has slowly slashed back its local Focus lineup in recent years, phasing out its fourth-generation lineup from six to three models by 2020 and discontinuing the ST-Line and Active models late last year.
The only Ford Focus variant left in Australian showrooms is the hot hatch ST, which will undergo a facelift in a few months (image top of story) but is unlikely to receive a significant upgrade before the plug is pulled overseas in 2025.

The D-segment Mondeo was also produced there until recently. Ford stopped production of the once-popular family sedan and estate in the spring of 2022 due to falling sales as buyers turned to crossovers.

The dark blue color scheme contrasts wonderfully with the black trim elements, particularly the cool multi-spoke wheels.
From the back, you can see that this Focus RS, like the previous generation, has a massive wing on its roof. The blacked-out taillights look great, as does the enormous diffuser that protrudes beneath the rear bumper cover.
RS Engine: Ford Focus 2024
The back view also reveals the twin exhaust tips protruding from the diffuser, indicating that a gas engine powers this Focus RS. The current-generation Focus ST, available in the UK, is powered by a turbocharged 2.3-liter four-cylinder engine.
The engine produces 276 horsepower and 310 lb-ft of peak torque. Ford claims a 0-60 mph sprint time of 5.7 seconds. While this is better than the regular current-generation Focus hybrid vehicles, a 2024 RS would require a more powerful engine to compete with modern hot hatches like the new 310hp 2023 Civic Type-R.
The 2018 Focus RS featured an angrier version of Ford’s turbocharged 2.3-liter engine. It used the same engine as the Mustang EcoBoost version but produced more power.
While the pony car’s engine produced 310 hp and 350 lb-ft of peak torque, Ford increased the performance to 350 hp in the Focus RS. As a result, the sporty hatchback could accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in 4.6 seconds and reach a top speed of 165 mph.
The current Mustang EcoBoost engine would most likely be used in a new Focus RS. The same 2.3-liter turbo four-cylinder engine powers the 2024 model. Ford increased the power output to 315 horsepower. Peak torque remains unchanged at 350 lb-ft.

The Seat Leon, Skoda Octavia, and Vauxhall Astra all point in the same direction, but we prefer precise physical controls that aren’t too distracting.
The view out of the Focus is generally good, and its front pillars block your visibility no more than other family cars. Over-the-shoulder visibility is also good, thanks to the large rear window. The Active model sits a little higher, but not enough to provide a genuinely commanding SUV-like driving position.
Front and rear parking sensors are standard equipment on all trims. You don’t get a rearview camera as standard (unless you go for the Ford Focus ST hot hatch), but you can add it as part of the optional Parking package, which includes park assist to help guide you into space.
All trim levels get bright, and full LED headlights are standard. The X trim allows you to upgrade the headlights to matrix adaptive headlights, allowing you to keep the headlights on without blinding other road users.
Infotainment
Regardless of trim, the Focus has a new 13.2-inch touchscreen infotainment system with a sharp display and great graphics. This easily rivals the offerings of premium rivals and is much better than Kia Ceed’s setup.
The system includes DAB radio, Bluetooth, built-in satellite navigation, and Android Auto and Apple CarPlay smartphone mirroring. Wireless phone charging comes standard on the X trim, as does an excellent B&O sound system with 10 speakers and a subwoofer. It’s a worthwhile upgrade for music lovers over an excellent six-speaker setup, but it could sound richer on other trims.
There are no physical controls on the infotainment system, which is a shame because relying solely on the touchscreen can be annoying when you’re trying to operate it on the move. The Mazda 3 system is more valuable because of the rotary controller between the front seats.
Comfort
The Focus’s interior feels solid, and its upper surfaces are soft. Additionally, every model gets a leather-wrapped gear knob and steering wheel, and the door cases are carpeted on three sides to reduce rattling if you put the key inside.
However, the fit or finish could be more impressive than the interior of a Mazda 3, Seat Leon, or Skoda Octavia. The Focus is thinner and has shiny plastic in prominent places, including around the gear lever and on the doors.
More effort has been put into this more expensive version, but no amount of fake chrome, wood, or carbon fiber accents can give this model the upscale air of a premium family car.
Storage
Even the tallest drivers should be able to find room in the Ford Focus, and its leg, head, and shoulder room is on par with the best family cars. Skoda Octavia provides more headroom.
There is Plenty of storage space, including several cup holders and a tray for your phone in the center console. Door pockets and glove box are appropriate sizes for the class.
The Focus had no rear space in previous versions, but the latest model is much more spacious. It has more legroom than the Octavia, and a six-footer can easily fit behind a similar-sized driver. The Seat Leon is equally spacious in the back, and the Skoda Scala has more space.
Another advantage of the Focus is that its rear floor is almost flat, making life very comfortable for passengers in the middle seat. Most of its competitors – including the Vauxhall Astra and VW Golf, have large vehicles that the middle passenger has to ride in.
When fitted, the panoramic sunroof eats into headroom, so if you want one but frequently transport tall rear passengers, try it before you buy.
2024 Ford Focus Engine

Even the lower, stiffer version of the ST-Line won’t make you shudder, although you should be more resistant to sharper bumps and potholes. This is especially true on the ST-Line.
The SUV-inspired Active model is the opposite, 30mm taller than the standard version. The extra height means they sway more from side to side on uneven surfaces than other versions.

For the best-handling Focus without going full-on ST hot hatch, choose the ST-Line or ST-Line. The Seat Leon is the only family car that can offer drivers similar sensations for the same price.
